A cargo vessel and a ferry with almost 700 passengers have collided in the Philippines.

The captain ordered the ferry Thomas Aquinas be abandoned; a rescue operation is underway involving two coast guard vessels and nearby ships according to local reports.

The collision of the 1973-built, 11405 gt ferry St. Thomas Aquinas and Madlives-flagged, 32 year old, 9758 gt Sulpicio Express Siete general cargo ship happened near the shore, close to the city of Cebu on Friday evening, local time.

According to the coast guard, the ferry struck the cargo vessel and listed before starting to sink.
