Philippines not banning seafarers from high-risk areas

Manila: Top seafarer supplier the Philippines is not banning crew from high-risk piracy areas such as the Gulf of Aden. In a statement the Philippines Joint Manning Group (JMG) clarified the country's government had not banned its seafarers from being deployed in piracy prone areas.

However, the JMG said the government had stressed that anti-piracy training had to be strengthened. Manning agencies must ensure their principals vessels only transit through designated safe corridors. Filipino seafarers crew close to 30% of the world fleet. [27/01/11]
