London: Mrs Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines, met with IMO secretary-general Efthimios E. Mitropoulos during her official visit to the UK last week. During a wide-ranging discussion encompassing issues relating to maritime safety, security, piracy and marine environment protection, Mrs. Macapagal-Arroyo expressed appreciation for IMO's work to prevent and suppress all manner of unlawful acts at sea, such as piracy and armed robbery against ships, of which Filipino seafarers have been unwitting victims.
Secretary-general Mitropoulos thanked President Macapagal-Arroyo for the contribution of the Philippines to the work of IMO; to the oversight functions of the IMO Council, to which the Philippines was recently re-elected; and to the global shipping industry, in particular as the principal supplier of its seafarers.
President Macapagal-Arroyo invited IMO, should the Organization opt for a Conference to adopt amendments to the STCW Convention and STCW Code that are currently being developed within the Organization, to hold it in Manila. [11/12/07]
