Philippines puts seafarers on heightened alert over Ebola
The world’s largest provider of seafarers, the Philippines, has put its maritime and crewing industries on a heightened state of alert against the deadly Ebola virus.

The Maritime Industrial Authority (Marina) said all officers and crew of international cargo and passenger ships entering the Philippines would be required to submit a health declaration that they are Ebola free, local press reported.

Officers and crew were to “be properly screened through the use of a thermal gun and subjected to a physical examination”.

Both Marina and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration have previously advised ship masters to avoid crew changes and to disallow seamen from availing themselves of shore leaves while calling on Ebola-affected ports.

The Philippines supplies nearly 400,000 seafarers to the international fleet.
