Pirates hijack Singapore-flagged chemical tanker

Singapore: Somali pirates hijacked a Singapore flagged chemical tanker with a crew of 24 on board in the Gulf of Aden, the Singapore government said on Saturday.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) received reports that Singapore-registered chemical tanker Pramoni was boarded by suspected pirates while transiting the Gulf of Aden. A distress alert was sent by the vessel at about 1730hrs on 1 Jan 2010 (Singapore time) while at position Lat 12º 30'N Long 47º 17'E. The vessel was on its way from Genoa, Italy to Kandla, India.

MPA is working with relevant government agencies and the ship manager, GBLT Shipmanagement Pte Ltd. The ship manager's emergency and crisis control centre in Singapore has been manned since the start of the situation, and it is working to establish communication with the vessel to ascertain the safety of the crew and cargo.

Chinese authorities have confirmed that five Chinese national seafarers are aboard the vessel.  [03/01/10]
