Singapore: Seven pirates armed with guns and knives assaulted a 6,200 dwt tanker Great Fish while it was enroute from Singapore to Vietnam on Sunday.

The pirates threatened the crew, stole their money and personal possessions, and escaped in a boat. The crew was not injured, according to an incident alert by ReCAAP.

“Since January 2012 till 15 April 2012, this is the first incident reported in the same vicinity in the South China Sea. This incident involved pirates who were reportedly armed with guns,” ReCAAP said.

In the whole of 2011, a total of seven incidents comprising six actual incidents and one attempted incident were reported, it added.
