The Port of Felixstowe says the performance of its troubled new terminal operating system is continuing to stabilise, however, productivity levels remain similar to a week earlier.

Some six weeks after installing the terminal operating system the UK port is still struggling to get its operations back to normal.

Shedding some light on what is actually going wrong with the new system the port said in an update on Tuesday that: “A number of issues, including inaccurate data about the position of some containers in the yard, have been successfully resolved.

“On Saturday 14th July, the latest major system upgrade was implemented. This important upgrade is designed to reduce the amount of shuffling in the yard, thereby increasing the productivity of loading vessels and trains. We expect further benefits of this upgrade to be seen in the coming week.”

The Hutchison operated port said that productivity last week was at 80% of the level pre-to the new system going live, which was similar to the week before. Volumes of 70,000 teu were handled across the quay compared to 66,000 teu a week earlier.

The problems at the port have seen some line diverting services and Maersk Line has move two transatlantic services to Liverpool for a 12 week period.

The bad news could get worse for Felixstowe with Peel Ports Liverpool2 terminal hoping that it can persuade the lines to make the switch permanent.

“Our objective is now to secure these or similar services in the long-term by delivering the cost, congestion and carbon emission benefits that Liverpool2 in particular will offer shipping lines and cargo owners,” said Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports.
