PTP still Malaysia's busiest container terminal

PTP still Malaysia's busiest container terminal

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor has announced a 4.8m teu container throughput for the year ending December 2006. It's performance, which was 15% higher than the year before, seals its position as the country's busiest container port for the fifth consecutive year, the port says.

PTP ceo Harun Johari (pictured) has attributed this growth to higher traffic due to new clients, increased capacity and improved attractiveness of the port. He particularly commended the Pelepas Free Zone for generating interest from companies around the world.

Harun believes that PTP will see steady growth and is optimistic about Malaysia's ability to cope with competition from Chinese ports. "A lot of corporate figures are already talking about China's cost of operations which has been rising of late," he said adding that the cost of operations in the two countries was expected to be on par within the next two years. He believes that this will bode well for new economic regions like the Iskandar Development Region where one of the attractions was its competitive operating cost.  [19/01/07]
