Hong Kong: The Board of Directors of the Association of Maritime Education and Training Institutions in Asia Pacific (AMETIAP) has announced that the Association has been renamed as The Global Maritime Education & Training Association (GlobalMET), as of September 1st, 2006. In its new role as a worldwide organization with over 100 members, the Association is seeking to represent the voice of the Maritime Education and Training institutes from around the world in other maritime industry and Government discussions. "Since the idea for this Association was first mooted, in 1989, then incorporated in Australia as AMETIAP (Global) Limited 10 years ago; the Association has had an enthusiastic reception whenever it has approached other training groups, institutions or Government bodies," said current Chairman, Capt Pradeep Chawla, Director of QA and Training for the Anglo-Eastern Group. The aim of GlobalMET is to share knowledge, ideas and expertise in the education and training methods for seafarers with a global target of easing the ever-increasing shortage of quality seafarers for the world's increasing global merchant fleet. GlobalMET has been steadily working to build a network of institutes and enabling members to exchange information, identify needs and implement better ways to assist each other. [06/09/06]
