Restructure for Evergreen Marine US agent

Taipei: Evergreen Shipping Agency (America), the agent for Evergreen Marine Corporation, has announced that it is to consolidate some North America offices and reduce staff amid what the company termed a "catastrophic economic crisis", reports Trafficworld. This follows announcements of capacity reductions on several trade lanes by Evergreen Line in response to the downturn in ocean shipping.

"The worldwide economic turmoil has created a situation we have not seen in our lifetimes," the company is reported as having said in a statement to all North America employees. The move is aimed at reducing costs and putting the company on a more sustainable structure moving forward.

"It is disappointing and disheartening that we are faced with a decision that has also impacted virtually every other carrier in ocean shipping today," a spokesperson told Trafficworld. "We are positioning EGA to survive the catastrophic economic crisis and to succeed when we recover from these difficult times."

Offices affected will include Baltimore, Chicago, Toronto, Charleston, S.C., and Norfolk, Va. The Salt Lake City office will close and the work will be assigned to Dallas. While some new positions will open up in the consolidation, an undisclosed number of positions will be eliminated. Departing employees will receive a severance package including salary and benefits. The company expects to complete the changes on or before March 15.  [31/12/08]
