Singapore: Fourteen shipyards belonging to six companies based here in the republic have agreed to share best practices on safety under a new initiative named the Marine Industry Safety Engagement Team (MINDSET). Yard delegations will visit each other on hosted visits in order to lay bare safety practices. The aim is to halve by 2013 Singapore's fatality rate at shipyards, which last year was nine workers in every 100,000. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has set a further target after that of 1.8 deaths per 100,000 by 2018. A draft blueprint for the marine sector has also been issued. The Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI) will help coordinate the new initiaitive. ASMI president Wong Weng Sun said the cross visits would foster self-regulation among shipyards and a sense of ownership of workplace safety issues, reports the Straits Times. [26/11/09]
