Salvage firms chosen for crippled Hansa Brandenburg

Salvage firms chosen for crippled Hansa Brandenburg
Leonhardt & Blumberg have appointed Five Oceans Salvage and SMIT Salvage for the salvaging of the still-ablaze and heavily damaged 1,740teu container vessel Hansa Brandenburg.

The vessel suffered a serious fire enroute from Singapore to Durban. Tug Coral Sea Flos is currently on its way to the vessel, which was last reported 200 nm Northeast of Mauritius.

Meanwhile, all 17 crew members are reported safe, having been picked up by Hermann Buss-owned containership Donau Trader.

While the cause of the incident has yet to be ascertained, Leonhardt & Blumberg has pledged that an investigation will be conducted, with a superintendent reportedly en route to Mauritius.

It is the second major fire on a container vessel in the Indian Ocean this month after the fore section of the stricken boxship MOL Comfort caught fire and later sank while being towed to Oman.
