Samsung unveils 16,000 teu design

Seoul: Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea has developed the world's largest container ship design, with a capacity of 16,000 teu.
SHI is currently building a 400 metre floating dock on which to construct the 16,000 teu ships, which it plans to start operating in the first half of 2009.
The company also plans to pursue research on ice-breaking container ships as the Arctic rapidly opens up for international shipping.
SHI was the first yard to deliver super post panamaxes and has since then consistently broken the box ship size records until the latest giant series of Maersk ships came out of the Odense yard in Denmark which are rumoured to hold as many as 14,500 teu. [1/11/07]
