Tokyo: Sanko Steamship is moving into the chemical tanker business. The company has ordered two 19,900-dwt newbuildings for delivery in 2011, reports the Kaiji Press. It has already made arrangements to charter them out to an overseas operator for a period of five years. Sanko will initially commission a shipmanagement company to manage both ships. But it plans to operate and manage chemical tankers on its own in the future.
'Sanko, which used to focus on bulkers and Aframax tankers, has been procuring newbuildings of other types in line with its policy to expand business through diversification of profit sources. It has so far branched out into five ship types, namely Panamax tankers (crude oil ship), Suezmax tankers, LR I-type product carriers, MR-type PCs and medium-size LPG carriers. It has also resumed offshore vessel operations and is building up its fleet at fever pitch,' the Kaiji Press noted. [
