SCI targets power firms

SCI targets power firms

Mumbai: State run Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) plans to enter into joint ventures with major power companies such as NTPC to provide dedicated arrangements for shipping their requirements of coal to India.??The plan is modelled on the lines of SCIs proposed joint venture with SAIL for import of up to one million tonnes of coking coal. The SAIL agreement is expected to be finalised by end of this month.
"We plan to acquire few assets immediately after the agreement with SAIL, which would give us good ground to target power companies," UC Grover, director technical and offshore, SCI, told Financial Chronicle.??
SCI initially plans to approach NTPC, which had a coal import target of 12.5 million tonnes for financial year 2009-10. Based on its progress with NTPC the company then plans to approach other public sector and private companies such as Coal India, JSW Energy and Adani Power who have huge coal import targets, to ferry their coal requirements in the coming years.
