Seafarer’s foot severed onboard ship at Port Hedland

Seafarer’s foot severed onboard ship at Port Hedland
A seafarer’s foot was severed in a towing operation at Australia’s Port Hedland, triggering an investigation from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, reports said.

A 27-year-old Indian seafarer onboard an iron ore carrier lost his foot when it got caught in a line during the accident last weekend. He remains in stable condition in hospital.

Reports said the Liberian-flagged vessel was chartered by Fortescue Metals Group (FMG).

“At the time of incident, the ship was berthing under the direction of the Port Hedland pilot with tugs being used in accordance with standard operating procedures as required by the Port Hedland Port Authority (PHPA),” FMG said in a statement.

“Fortescue’s emergency response personnel responded to the need for assistance and worked closely with PHPA, the ship’s crew and local paramedics to provide the crewman with medical treatment before he was flown to Port Hedland hospital for further treatment,” it added.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said it is conducting an investigation to see if the accident can be avoided, and if there is anything that could have been done differently to averted it from happening.
