Shanghai: Close to 500 people gathered at the Pudong Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai on June 25, Thursday evening, to honor 21 well-deserving award winners at the 2nd Seatrade Asia Awards.
The gala evening was capped off with the Seatrade Lifetime Achievement Award going to Mr. C. C Tung, Chairman of Orient Overseas (International) Ltd.
C. C. Tung was Chairman of The Hong Kong Shipowners' Association from 1993-1995 and Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce from 1999-2001. Mr. Tung is currently a member of the Hong Kong Port Development Council and Hong Kong Logistics Development Council. Under his stewardship containerline OOCL has emerged as one of the best run liner companies in the world.
Claiming the Personality of the Year was Capt Wei Jiafu, President & CEO of COSCO Group. The Personality award reflects someone who has been high profile and in the news over the past 12 months. The shipping industry has followed every word of Capt Wei in recent months as it tries to steer itself out of a downturn.
The event's inaugural Seatrade Cruise Personality Asia Award went to Chairman Lu Haihu of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. Ltd who was recognised for his work in developing the financial metropolis into a world class cruise destination. Under Chairman Lu's guidance a wonderful, modern state of the art cruise terminal has been built and leading cruise lines now flock to Shanghai.
Also in the limelight was the Deal of the Year, secured by Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. The winning deal was the stunning dozen 400,000dwt very large ore carriers ordered by Brazilian mining giant Vale. The ships are the largest to be built in China and the order is the largest in China ever, with the first delivery due in the first quarter of 2011.
A total of 21 awards were presented at the prestigious black tie event which was attended not just by regional and international industry players but also by senior government officials as well as key representatives from the China Shipowners Association and the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry.
Christopher Hayman, Chairman of Seatrade, said "The Seatrade Asia Awards reflect shipping excellence right across Asia. The winners as well as the finalists have demonstrated a commitment to best practices in their respective sectors that is a credit to the Asian shipping community."
