Shanghai: With its first phase just about complete Shanghai Changxing shipbuilding base Phase II construction formally has now commenced. It will build 4 large docks to create an annual 3.5 million deadweight tonne capability.
For Phase I, 4 large docks have been built to create an annual 4.5 million deadweight cargo capacity of tonnes. Phase I started construction work in June 2005 and is expected to be fully complete by the end of this year. Shanghai Changxing, to the north of the financial metropolis on an island in the Yangtze delta, has ambitions to be the world's largest shipyard. [07/12/07]
