Shanghai retains top port title

Shanghai: Shanghai Port authorities have announced a total cargo throughput of 537m tons for 2006, an increase of 21.2%, which they say has helped Shanghai retain its position as the world's busiest port. A record total of 55,000 ships berthed, of which some 23,000 were container vessels carrying 21.71m teu worth of containers ( 20.1%). In addition, Shanghai accounted for approximately 12% of cargo at all Chinese ports last year. Singapore is expected to finish second busiest port worldwide, add the Shanghai authorities, with anticipated throughput of around 450m tons. [02/01/07]
