Seoul: Samsung Heavy Industries is scheduled to hand over a 10,000teu vessel to owner Hanjin Shipping next month. The vessel, which is one of five mega-container sister ships, is said to have cost the Korean giant $126bn. According to local news source Joongang Daily, Hanjin had to postpone the original acquisition date of February 2010 as a result of last year's severe shipping slump. The contracts were signed in 2006.
"The size of container ships has always been a measure of national prowess as well as the strength of the company," an industry insider is quoted as saying. "The acquisition of a 10,000teu ship will collectively raise Hanjin and Korea's competitive edge in shipping to the next level."
Hanjin plans to deploy the vessel on the trans-pacific route to the US. [08/06/10]
