SHI, Hanjin cooperate on fuel saving project
Seoul: Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanjin Shipping have agreed to cooperate on joint research for a Vessel Portal Service (VPS) System for 4,600-teu ships that is touted to cut fuel consumption by up to 15%.

The two Korean maritime industry stalwarts are billing it as a "model case" of cooperation between a shipbuilding company and a shipper in the domestic market using a combination of green technology and an advanced navigation system to overcome the dire situation in shipping.

The new integrated energy management system combines the technological excellence of Samsung Heavy Industries and the ship and fleet management expertise of Hanjin Shipping, and the companies hope that the project will be a win-win partnership that enables both to overcome the current economic slowdown, the two companies said in a statement.
