Mumbai: The Indian shipping industry has reached a new marker in its search and rescue efforts, helping save a total of 177 lives and assisting an additional 90 individuals in 2005. Five top shipping companies including Good Earth Maritime, Great Eastern Shipping, Varun Shipping and Sanmar Shipping were congratulated by the US consulate Michael Owen for their participation in the United States Coast Guard's Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (Amver) System. These shipowners, who had made their ships available for search and rescue missions for both domestic and international Amver enabled ships, were awarded a letter of appreciation and a certificate for each ship at the second Seatrade and Tradewinds sponsored ISS conference held in Mumbai last week.
