Singapore: NYK ShipManagement Pte Ltd (NYKSM) will host the great and the good of Singapore shipping at the opening of its new Training Centre next Monday, November 27. With a full set of equipment including a bridge simulator, engine room simulator and cargo handling simulator, the NYKSM Training Centre will be able to provide training places for more than 400 seafarers annually. Separately, in conjunction with parent NYK Group, NYKSM has developed new software to enhance on-the-job training of seafarers, which it regards as an essential adjunct to classroom training. Dubbed NYK-STARS (the NYK Shipboard Training and Assessment Recording System), the software consists of self-study programs designed for cadets, officers (of specialised vessel types) and engineers, which can be run on personal computer and include general operations guides, company-specific information, training video clips and self-assessment tests.
With a fleet set to expand to around 930 units by 2010, NYK needs to hire and train an extra 200 seafarers annually over the next few years. For this reason the company recently installed extra cabins on an LNG tanker and three containerships to accommodate up to 20 cadets. [23/11/06]
