Outgoing Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) chief executive Andrew Tan made what may well be his final speech to the city state’s shipping community on Friday morning.

Giving the opening address at the Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS) Forum Tan said, “This is probably the last occasion I will speak to all of you”.

One of the first things he did was to introduce his successor to the audience - Quah Ley Hoon, currently MPA chief executive (designate), who will take over the role from 1 January 2019. After a month at the MPA Quah is starting to be introduced the shipping community at large in the Lion city having also been in attendance at the Singapore Shipping Association’s (SSA) year-end cocktail reception the previous evening.

Quah Ley Hoon named as chief executive of Singapore MPA replacing Andrew Tan

Commenting on his time at MPA Tan said: “It is a very cohesive industry and five years have come and gone very quickly.” He also thanked the Singapore shipping community for its support of the Singapore flag.

Tan has been at the helm of the MPA, which regulates one of the world’s largest ports, fifth largest flag-state, and promotes the country’s role as an international maritime centre, for five years. He is retiring from government service to take on new challenges. What these are remains to be seen but it is hard to imagine him sitting still for long, and demonstrates a clear passion around areas such as the environment and sustainability.
