Singapore shipping industry doyen Lua Cheng Eng passes away

Singapore: Former Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) chief and Singapore Shipping Association (SSA)president Lua Cheng Eng has passed away. Lua, who was one of the leading figures in the development of Singapore's shipping industry passed away on Tuesday. Lua was ceo of NOL for 20 years from 1979 to 1999 and presided over a huge growth of the company including the acquisition of APL. "Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends of Lua. The NOL Group is today the fifth-largest container shipping company in the world. We could not have achieved this position without Lua's bold vision and years of contributions to the enterprise," said Cheung Wai Keung, chairman of NOL. Lua was also the founding president of the SSA serving in the post for 18 years from 1985 to 2003. "Lua had been very passionate about the Singapore shipping industry and had dedicated 18 long years of service as president of SSA," said SS Teo president of SSA. [10/11/10]
