SingTel bags multi-million dollar VSAT contract

Singapore: Torm Shipping has signed a multi-million dollar contract with Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) to equip its fleet of 100 ships with the company's Global Maritime Very Small Aperture Terminal (GMVSAT) service. The maritime broadband service, is equipped with advanced auto-beam switching capability, allowing Torm's vessels to move from one ocean region to another without the need for time-consuming re-configurations of satellite communications equipment. It offers a cost-effective solution for office applications such as email, Intranet and Internet access and voice communications to their employees at sea.

"VSAT opens the doors for the future," said Claus Usen Jensen, evp for Torm Shippings technical division. " We can now ensure better communication between vessel and office, but not least between vessel and home.  We now have to think in new work routines both in the office and onboard."

Bill Chang, evp for SingTel's business, said: "SingTel's GMVSAT solution will enable Torm Shipping to reduce costs and boost business productivity by enabling its ships to become seamless extensions of the shore-based office.  It will also improve crew welfare by allowing seafarers to undertake online distance training and stay in touch with loved ones while at sea. This multi-million dollar contract demonstrates Torm Shipping's confidence in SingTel to deliver world-class Infocomm Technology (ICT) solutions."  [20/11/08]
