Taipei: SITC Maritime, a leading Chinese intra-Asia player, has applied to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) to set up a branch in Taiwan, becoming the first China-based shipping firm to do so after the latest round of cross-strait direct transportation talks. MOTC has signaled it will approve the branch opening. SITC has been offering direct cross-strait shipping since rules were relaxed in 2008. The branch office status would mean SITC would not have to rely on third party agents to consolidate its containers for onward transportation from the island. The next set of transport talks between Taipei and Beijing is set for March this year. [01/03/10]
