SITC has placed an order for two additional 2,400 teu containerships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for $29m each or a total of $58m.

The order, for the ships with a requirement to have a minimum container intake of about 34,800 tons, is scheduled for delivery in September and November 2020 respectively, SITC said in a stock market announcement.

SITC had earlier placed another order for an initial two similar vessels last year and at the beginning of this year followed that up by taking options on two more with Yangzijiang.

The latest pair of newbuildings come at a slightly higher price to the $25m per vessel SITC paid with its previous order.

Intra-Asia specialist SITC has steadily been acquiring assets in recent months and said the newbuildings would “enable the Company to expand its self-owned fleet of container vessels to meet the increase in demand for the Company’s services”.

In August 2017 it placed a $68m order for four 1,011 teu containerships with Korea’s Dae Sun Shipbuilding & Engineering.
