Russian shipowner Sovcomflot has continued its switch to using LNG as marine fuel ordering three gas powered product tankers from Zvezda shipbuilding complex.

The 51,000 dwt, 1B ice class, MR tankers will be primarily fuelled by LNG and chartered to Novatek. Using LNG as marine reduces SOx emissions and particulate matter emissions by 100%, NOx emissions by 85%, and CO2 emissions by 27%.

Sovcomflot is one of the first tanker owners to commit to using LNG as a marine fuel for vessels other than LNG carriers. Last year it took delivery of three LNG fuelled aframaxes, and in September ordered two LNG powered aframaxes from Zvezda.
