SSA turns 21 with membership at an all-time high

Singapore: Addressing the 21st Anniversary Gala Dinner of the Singapore Shipping Association last Friday, president S.S. Teo was able to disclose that membership of the association had reached a record 281 (including 87 Associate members).

As if to mark the coming of age, a number of amendments to the SSA constitution were announced. The tenure of the Presidency, formerly open-ended, has been limited to a maximum of three terms or six years; individual membership for persons not affiliated to company (such as researchers) has been introduced at S$300 a year; and former Minister for Transport Yeo Cheow Tong was inducted as SSA's first honorary Member in view of his 'long association with and strong support for the SSA' - a gesture that will not have been lost on current Minister of Transport Raymond Lim who was attending the dinner.

Teo also stressed how the SSA had this year decided to form a Young Executives Group which so far had attracted 83 members - certain of whom, Teo hoped, could be identified and groomed as future SSA leaders.

The SSA continued to work with the Ministry of Transport, Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) and Singapore Maritime Foundation to 'actively promote Singapore as a dynamic and vibrant international maritime centre, Teo said. And on the international front it remained an active member of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the Federation of ASEAN Shipowners' Associations (FASA) and the Asian Shipowners Forum (ASF), he added, in particular working very hard with other ASF members at looking into the feasibility of setting up a permanent office for the Forum.  [30/10/06]
