Singapore: The Singapore Shipping Association ushered in the Year of the Golden Pig today at its lunar New Year cocktails, which was attended by a record number of some 400 guests. Association president SS Teo (pictured) urged members to voice their concerns and channel issues through the association for higher-level deliberation in local and international forums.
The association scored a first recently when the government responded to a major item of SSA's pre-national budget "wish list" . The government said it would be extending the approved Shipping Logistics (ASL) Enterprise scheme from a period of five to ten years. It means SS members who are shipping agents, ship managers or shipping logistics firms and qualify under this scheme, can benefit from a concessionary tax rate for qualifying income for a longer period. Teo saw this as a good start to the lunar new year. He also urged all SSA members to support the forthcoming Sea Asia (April 2-4) as it was an opportunity to project "the Asian voice in the international maritime arena". [23/02/07]
