The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has relaxed the requirements for residue cargo requirements for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to benefit from ballasting due rates.

In a circular the SCA said that to meet the desires of owners and to encourage more LNG vessels to transit the canal it had amended its navigation rules from 1 July this year.

Under the amendment the amount of residue cargo that can be carried by an LNG vessel and still qualify for a ballast vessel dues has increased from 2% of summer deadweight to 5%.

The SCA has introduced a number of discounts for vessels of different types, in particular to encourage the use of canal for backhaul voyages.
