Surcharge hits Colombo hub hopes

Colombo: Reacting to what they say are worsening ongoing delays caused by a workers' go-slow at Colombo port, local feeder operators belonging to the Sri Lanka Association of Vessel Operators have said they will impose a 'recovery surcharge' of $40 per teu. It is thought such a move would severely dent the aspirations of Colombo, which currently handles around 2.45m teu a year, to become a major regional transhipment hub.  [25/07/06]
