Sydney: Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) reports that one of its vessels last weekend led a flotilla of boats under the Sydney Harbour Bridge to mark the 75th anniversary of the landmark structure.
The honour fell to the company since a Wilh. Wilhelmsen cargo ship, the 1927-built 6,465gt Temeraire (pictured), had been one of the first vessels to pass under the bridge at its official opening in 1932, carrying wool and metals out of Australia for Europe.
Today, her modern counterpart carries four times the volume of cargo, mainly in the form of cars and mining and agricultural machinery from Europe, North America and South Africa to Australia.
WWWL, jointly owned by Wilh. Wilhelmsen of Norway and Wallenius Lines of Sweden, handles 3.3m global movements of cars and rolling equipment annually - 1.7m by sea and 1.6m by land. In addition, the company provides technical services for 1.65m cars and 47,000 rolling equipment units. [22/03/07]
