Taicang ushers in second phase

Suzhou: Taicang Terminals celebrated the official opening of its second phase today. In the first ten months of 2006, Taicang Terminals handled 441,000 teu with a year-on-year increase of 132% making it one of the fastest growing ports in the world. During the same period, the total throughput of the port reached 17.748m tons with a year-on-year increase of 51%. The second phase, with a total investment of 2.35bn yuan, comprises four dedicated container berths with a design capacity of 2m teu annually. The first berth was put into operation since July this year and the second berth is expected to be put into operation next month. The entire phase is expected to be fully functional by the end of 2007 giving Taicang a total annual capacity of 2.55m teu.  [16/11/06]
