Taiwan to upgrade three ports

Taiwan to upgrade three ports

Taipei: The Taiwanese Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) has announced that it is to invest more than $1bn over the next four years to upgrade Keelung Harbour, Taipei Harbour and Suao Harbour.

The Taipei Harbour project (costing $695m) would involve supplementary expansion to the current additional berths and increased handling capacity already underway. The latest expansion will see development of a two kilometre-long and 250 metre wide waterway expected to increase the region's capacity as a tourism and leisure hub.

The majority of the $180m needed for the Keelung Harbour project will be sourced from state coffers and $109m from the private sector. Work at the harbour would include construction of a new highway linking the port to other cities and extension of a coastal embankment. Suao Harbour will see an upgrade of infrastructure on the premises.  [17/04/07]
