Bangkok: The hijacking of a Thai general cargo vessel on the early hours of Christmas day has brought the number of seafarers held captive by Somali pirates to over 600.
The 20,377 dwt, Thor Nexus, was hijacked in the early hours of 25 December 450nm of the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean according to EU Navfor. The vessel was on her way to Bangladesh to Jebel Ali at the time of the attack. The vessel had a crew of 27 Thai nationals and no further details of the attack are known.
The Christmas day hijacking brings the told number of seafarers being held hostage by Somali pirates to 601, on 25 vessels. [26/12/10]
