Tianjin passes annual target of 250m tons

Beijing: Throughput at the rapidly expanding North Chinese port of Tianjin reached the full-year target of 250m tons on December 17, leading to a revised annual estimate of 255m tons, thereby ranking the port 10th largest in the world. Container traffic for the year is expected to reach 5.9m teu, 22% more than last year's tally of 4.8m teu ( 26%), making Tianjin as 17th largest box port for 2005. The port is embarking on a $5bn expansion to 100 sq kms over the next three-five years in order to meet its goal of a 10m teu capacity by 2010.  [19/12/06]
