Training seafarers from the ground up with a 'ship in campus'

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) new seafarer training academy in the Philippines – MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy – in Salitran, Dasmariñas City, is set to open in August having received approval from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

 

Located about 30km south of Manila construction has been completed on the academy which sits on a 13.2 ha site with a floor area of 30,000 sq m, with a capacity to handle 300 students a year.

The main feature of the new academy is a “ship in campus” which aims for students to be work ready as soon as they finish their studies.

“The facility imitates not only ship’s exterior, but also its layout of the practice facilities inside the building, as realistic as possible," MOL said. The ship in campus features a full scale engine room and bridge. molshipengine

"An inauguration ceremony for the academy is planned in September, with guests from Philippine government agencies,” the company added.

With the maritime academy MOL intends to further improve the marine technical skills of it trainee seafarers in the Philippines. The Japanese shipowner has a longstanding partnerships with Magsaysay for Filipino seafarers.
