Hong Kong: Transfield, a leading Hong Kong bulker operator, has ordered three 180,000 dwt capesizes plus another three on option from China's Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC) for $102.5m each. The ships due for delivery in 2010-2011.
Transfield operates a fleet of around 200 ships, mainly on charter. These are debut capsize newbuilds for the low profile firm. Currently, it owns only two secondhand ships it purchased -- one capesize and one panamax. Transfield's move into newbuilds is indicative of how long the charter rate bull run is likely to last.
