Mumbai: The South Indian port of Tuticorin has received approval from the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport & Highways, TR Baalu (pictured), for the construction of a new berth at North breakwater. Upon completion, the Rs 40 crore ($10.1m) North Cargo Berth -1 will be capable of handling coal vessels of between 65,000-75,000dwt with a maximum draft of 12.8 mtr. It is expected to boost port capacity by 2.93m tonnes annually. [16/11/07]
