Hong Kong: The Univan-managed VLCC Shinyo Navigator, under the command of Capt R Bhalla, rescued 11 survivors from the ill-fated car carrier vessel Dubai Trans on June 5.
The vessel was en route from Al Mukkalah to Hamriya when its main engine and auxillary engines failed in the rough weather generated by the tropical cyclone Gonu. The incident took place around 80nm from the coast of Oman and the bad weather precluded shore assistance.
Shinyo Navigator as the on-scene commander of the operation, assisted by vessels Donegal Spirit and Smaragd, searched for survivors during the whole day but sadly the remaining 10 crew members could not be traced. The Hong Kong Marine Department issued a formal letter of thanks to Univan and Capt Bhalla. [08/06/07]
