Van Oord awarded $68.5m dredging contract in Indonesia
Dutch-based dredging company Van Oord has been awarded a $68.5m contract for dredging and maintenance work for the western access channel to the port of Surabaya in Indonesia by Pelindo III.

Works will begin in May this year and will end 10 months later, to be followed by a two-year maintenance programme. It is the second contract for Van Oord in Subaraya; the first having been signed in November 2013 for the construction of a business park.

The project involves widening the existing channel to 150 m and deepening it to minus 13 metres with a total of more than 10m cubic metres of silt removed, in addition to removing two ship wrecks.

The port of Surabaya, the second largest city of Indonesia is important and the widening and deepening of its access channel will boost further development of the port. Van Oord is currently developing several projects in Indonesia, including the construction of a container terminal in Tanjunk Priok, Jakarta.
