Hanoi: Vietnam has launched its first container manufacturing plant in northern Hai Duong province, which is the second biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Wednesday.
Vinashin-TGC Container Company, a joint venture between Vietnam' s biggest shipbuilder, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group ( Vinashin), and Toong Goen from Taiwan, inaugurated Tuesday the plant with annual capacity of 45,000 teu. Total investment for the facility is $30 million. Up to 80 per cent of the joint venture's containers will be exported.
Vinashin will help the joint venture raise its annual container production capacity to 200,000 teu by 2010 with the construction of more plants in Vietnam's central and southern regions.
Demand for shipping containers in Vietnam annually increases by around 50 per cent, the newspaper said. [21/12/07]
