Vietnam Supreme Court upholds Vinalines executives’ death sentence

Vietnam Supreme Court upholds Vinalines executives’ death sentence
Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines)’s former chairman Duong Chi Dung and its former director general Mai Van Phuc lost their appeal seeking to revert their death sentence.

Vietnam’s Supreme People Court upheld on Wednesday the 16 December ruling that found them guilty in a high profile corruption case. The two former Vinalines were amongst nine other defendants seeking appeals.

It was clear that the Court wanted to make an example of the two former senior executives. The Court said that confirming the death sentence would act as a deterrent to public officials for not engaging in corruption acts.

The Supreme People’s Court found capital punishment was justified in this instance given the amount the pair had embezzled and the fact that Dung fled the country instead of giving himself up to police after the case broke.

The two former executives were convicted of embezzling VND10bn ($474,000) each.

Dung fled the country, allegedly with the help of his police officer brother when the scandal first broke in May 2012. He was apprehended in Cambodia and brought back to Vietnam four months later.
