Paris: Containerships on hold at sea as of July 7 totaled 1.21 million teu in terms of capacity, according to findings by French maritime consultant AXS Alphaliner. The total volume of idled space is equivalent to 9.5% of the world's boxship fleet. This number is down 0.2 points from two weeks earlier, and continues to decrease since peaking on June 8 at 1.31 million teu.
Some 200,000 teu of boxship capacity has been scrapped this year, with the figure likely to exceed 300,000 teu by year end. [08/07/09]
