Volumes improve at Felixstowe, but problems continue with terminal operating system

The Port of Felixstowe reported an improvement in volumes handled last week, although still lower than expectations, as it continues to grapple with problems caused by its new terminal operating system installed last month.

In an update the Hutchison Ports run facility said that the UK terminal handled 74,000 teu last week up from 70,000 teu the previous week. However, this was lower than the previous year and the operator’s expectations.

It said that upgrades to the terminal operating system had led to improvements in performance such as the stacking arrangements in the container yard which has resulted in fewer shuffles being undertaken and the reduction in unproductive moves.

“We continue to pursue a number of important initiatives and are confident that they will deliver further shipside and landside productivity improvements but the most recent changes have lifted shipside productivity rates by 8% in the last week,” the port said.

The problems at the port have seen some line diverting services and Maersk Line has move two transatlantic services to Liverpool for a 12 week period.
