Wärtsilä contracted for 11 gas cargo handling systems
Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply gas cargo handling systems to 11 new gas carriers under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD).

The new systems, to be fitted on six new-type 78,700 cu m Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) as well as two conventional VLGCs and three Medium Gas Carriers (MGCs), represent one of the largest deals for gas cargo handling solutions ever received by the company, with delivery scheduled between late 2016 and early 2018.

Designed to minimise downtime at gas terminals by speeding up the loading processes, each system comprises three Wärtsilä gas reliquefaction plants and one Wärtsilä purge gas recovery unit per vessel. Total scope of supply includes cargo pumps, inert gas plants, and an equipment package comprising compressors, heat exchangers and control systems, as well as engineering, arrangement drawings, site commissioning at the yards and crew training.

The gas reliquefaction plants have a higher refrigeration capacity and better efficiency than earlier versions delivered to VLGCs, capable of handling propane with a high ethane content up to 8.5% mol. Meanwhile, the Purge Gas Recovery units will significantly reduce hydrocarbon emissions by collecting the hydrocarbons in the purge gas during the gassing up of the cargo tanks.

"During recent years we have delivered numerous gas cargo handling systems for different sizes and types of these ships, and these latest contracts provide further evidence of our leading technologies in this field,” said Timo Koponen, vp of Flow and Gas Solutions at Wärtsilä. “We are very pleased to be again working on these projects with HHI and HMD to provide efficient solutions for the owners.”
