Yantian launches sea-rail intermodal service

Yantian launches sea-rail intermodal service

Hong Kong: Shenzhen's Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) has teamed up with the state railway operator and international powdered milk manufacturer Wyeth to commence a YICT-Guangzhou sea-rail intermodal service for import cargo. The first train fully loaded with Wyeth powdered milk was sent to Guangzhou earlier this month. YICT said it would provide weekly service on the route if the business becomes stable.

Before launching the import train service, empty containers had to be transported to Guangzhou by rail and loaded with export cargo and sent back to YICT. Now containers loaded with import cargo are transported to Guangzhou, discharged and loaded again with export cargo and sent back to YICT, improving efficiency of the logistics chain and reducing costs, a YICT statement said.

YICT now has one port railway, the Pingyan Railway, which is connected to the Beijing-Kowloon Railway and Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. It provides one-stop sea-rail intermodal services for import and export companies in Changsha, Nanchang and Guangdong, the statement added.  [13/08/07]
