Dr S C Misra holds a B Tech degree in Naval Architecture from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He has retired as a Professor of IIT Kharagpur in September 2013. He had held the post of the first Director of the Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam campus from 2009 till 2013. Apart from teaching naval Architecture to students, Prof Misra has been involved in design of ships and boats and other water based infrastructure. He has worked in the areas of inland water transportation and coastal and short sea vessel design, construction and operation. His book Design Principles of Ships and Marine Structures published by Taylor and Francis Group has been widely appreciated. Currently he is the Chairman of Naval research Board and the founder President of a think tank organisation, Forum for River and Ocean Scientists and Technologists (FROST).
